Several hundred years after thread had stopped falling the Dragon Riders celebrated the 500th year without thread on the Southern Continent. At the celebration a new herdbeast provider supplied several new beasts which the dragons ate. The Riders and Dragons celebrated all night without knowing that dark times approached.
Only a few sevendays later dragons all over Pern began to die in great numbers and most of there riders took there own lives. Healers began to work as hard as they could to find the cure and by the time they did most of the Weyrs were empty and only three queen dragons were left alive. Since there were so few riders left everyone moved to Benden Weyr which was renamed Silent Weyr in memory of all that had died. Southern Weyr however had the fewest deaths and convinced that Southern Weyr had plotted it, the Silent Weyr Weyrleader banned all Southern Riders from the North.
The Silent Weyr Senior Queen dragon had just clutched when her rider died in a freak accident that involved her being bucked off a runner and breaking her neck. The only other queen in the North rose a few days later but it was her first mating flight and the rider was weak minded and inexperienced. When the queen was caught she went between with the bronze and both stayed there unable to escape. Both riders took there lives. To make matters worse the last living queen in Southern was old and just died of old age.
Pern was queen less except for the large clutch that had been laid at Silent Weyr. By some feat of good fortune two gold eggs had been laid. A Search was conducted that stretched out all over the North. Two twin girls by the names of Narissa and Arli were Searched from Telgar Hold and even more surprising was they each impressed a queen at the hatching. It was on odd experience but everyone knew they would make fine Queenriders.
Only a few sevendays later asked for one of the Weyrling Queenriders to be transferred to there Weyr since they were still banned from the North since it was believed that they still carried the disease. Being without a queen was chaos for the Southern Weyr. Silent Weyr knew that whoever they sent down there had a good chance of being infected because they did not know and did not believe the sickness was gone from Southern.
Southern then sent a note saying it would kidnap both of the young riders. Not even a month old yet the twins feared for the safety of there queens but Silent Weyr promised not to let anything happen, but Southern Weyr is cunning and capable of taking them both if they wish. With each passing day the threat of Silent Weyr losing both of it’s queens grows stronger……
